There was a bright pretty girl named Ashima lived in the Azhaodi, she was falling love with local a young man Ahei. Unfortunately, Azhi, the son of the headman also likes the pretty girl very much, but he only coveted the beauty of the girl, and he kept a vicious idea in his mind.

One day on the fair, Azhi wanted to take liberties with Ashima, however, the pretty girl scolded him. But Azhi refused to give up the evil idea, and sent a matchmaker to persuade the girl with a lot of treasures, the girl don't like him and refused firmly. As a result, Azhi sent his henchmen to pillage the pretty girl when her lover Ahei went to herd in distant place. Ashima was very angry and anxious but could do nothing, so she dropped the love-promise flower camellia into the river, then the river flowed backwards at once, and her lover came back as soon as he knew his girl needed help. Blocked by the great mountain in the road, Ahei got through them with a magical arrow, and continuo riding very fast. Azhi used up varieties of intimidations and temptations, but Ashima never gave in. The son of headman flew into rage from shame, and at the moment when Azhi wanted to raise a lash to beat Ashima, Ahei arrived. Ahei raised an idea that he would compete songs with Azhi as their decisive struggle. Azhi agreed. However, when he didn't win in competition, Azhi attempted to hurt Ahei with underhanded attack. Ahei was angry, and used his magical arrow to shot the gate of the stockade village, the arrow was shot in the memorial tablet of god, Azhi was panic-stricken, and his henchmen tried their best to pull out the arrow, but the arrow is yet absolutely still. Azhi used out all his tricks, and had no alternative but to set free Ashima. Ashima and his lover went home happily. When they came to a stream, they sat down on the edge and had a short rest. Azhi sent his henchmen stole the lovers' magical arrow, and used floodwater to drown the pretty girl. Shouting in sorrowful voice, Ahei saw his lover become a rock.

In 1964, the folk long poem Ashima was rewrote and made into opera movie by Haiyan Film Studio, and it is the first color film in China. The film was popular in China and overseas, and the lead actress Yang Likun became a famous actress.

In 1982, the film was captured the medal of Best Dancing in the third Spain International Music Dancing.
